Live! In concert…

August 23, 2007 | Life in General

So, in a post last week, Alex talked about concerts she missed out on and asked the question “Who would you want to see, dead or alive. And who did you miss”. Or something like that. Today, me and some coworkers were talking about the concerts we’d been to and it got me to thinking…who have I seen?

Now, before I give you my list, I would just like to point out that I am a collector of movie/concert/special events tickets. Not everyone else’s, just my own. I started doing this back in the 80’s. Eventually I’ll scrapbook everything, but it’s cool to look back and see what movies I saw, and what events and concerts I attended. Just don’t get freaked out when you see the dates.

1980’s Concerts
Chuck Berry @ Octoberfest - Oct 1988

New Kids on the Block - June 1989

Run D.M.C. - June 1988 (my Dad had played basketball with these guys during the day–the same day of the concert, I think–and he had no idea who they were..or didn’t even get an autograph! “They didn’t have all their necklaces on!” he’d said in his defense. Yeah. Right. Whatev)

New Edition w/ Al B. Sure and Bobby Brown - Nov 1988

1990’s Concerts
Sugar Ray - Mar 1998 (this was the concert where I experienced a mosh pit for the first time. No, it wasn’t intentional. Yes, it sucked. And yes, I woke up with bruises the next morning)

DC Talk - Mar 1994

Chris Isaak w/ Silvertone - Apr 1991

Bush - May 1997

DC Talk: Supernatural Experience w/ Jennifer Knapp and The W’s - Feb 1999 (again. This group is a great Christian band. They were promoting their album “Supernatural” which is freakin’ awesome).

98 Degrees - Apr 1999 (I think Jessica Simpson opened for them and her sister, Ashley, was one of her back-up dancers)

Atomic Punks - Apr 1999 (I’m pretty sure I wasn’t there to see this group. I think there were a bunch of bands and there was one in particular that I wanted to see. But don’t remember who)

Dogstar - May 1999 (Keanu Reeves played guitar in this band and I got a chance to meet him during a short break. I was trippin’ out because I had just seen him in “The Matrix” the week before.)

Alanis Morrisette and Tori Amos - Sept 1999 (yes, Tori again. I wanted to hear “Little Earthquakes”. Again. This was a great concert. A little overlong, but great)

Eve 6 - May 1999

Elton John - Oct 1992

Y95 Rock 4 Life w/ Wilson Philips, T.L.C., and Michael W. Smith - Sept 1992

Marky Mark - Mar 1992 (by the time this concert ended, I had a bucket of drool by my feet)

Paula Abdul w/ Color Me Badd - June 1992 ( I went specfically to see Color Me Badd. I had a serious love jones for Bryan Abrams)

Tommy Page w/ Sweet Sensation and Linear - Sept 1990 (I know what you’re thinking: “Tommy who?” I don’t even remember what song he sang, but he was a one-hit wonder)

M.C. Hammer and special guest - Dec 1990 (I don’t remember who the special guest was)

Club MTV starring Bell Biv Devoe - Aug 1991 (LOL. Anyone remember Club MTV?)

Janet Jackson - Aug 1994

311 - Oct 1997 (I came home smelling like pot after attending this concert. No, I wasn’t smoking it! EW!)

Depeche Mode w/ Stabbing Westward - Dec 1998 (I had nosebleed seats because I waited until the last minute to buy them. I decided at the last minute that I wanted to see Stabbing Westward. “Save Yourself” is one of my favorite songs by that group)

Billy Joel - Oct 1990

Michael W. Smith - Apr 1993 (he has a beautiful song called “Place in this World” that makes me cry every time I hear it)

New Kids on the Block - Sept 1990 (Yes, again. I had a serious love jones for Jordan Knight. The first time I saw them was at a smaller, more intimate venue. And before they really exploded)

Tori Amos - July 1996

Seal - July 1995

Dishwalla - Sept 1998 (JR Roberts is effing hot! “Charlie Brown’s Parents” from the Counting Blue Cars album is one of my favorite songs. Off that album, that is)

Edwin McCain - Jul 1998

Jodeci, Mary J. Blige and more: presented by B.E.T.- Nov 1995 (don’t remember who else was there)

Vanilla Ice - Dec 1990 (a guy I went to high school with opened up for him. And I actually got to touch him (Vanilla Ice, that is) as he ran by me to go on stage. And yes, I admit I saw his movie “Cool as Ice” twice when it came out. Yes, I’m a dork)

New Millenium Concerts:

Lenny Kravitz w/ Pink - Sept 2002
(4th row, ya’ll!)

Summer Kickoff 2000 featuring Enrique Iglesias - May 2000 (there were a bunch of other artists at this thing, including Collective Soul. Enrique was the main draw, though)

Tantric - May 2001

Linkin Park w/ Crazy Town - Apr 2001 (I’m still pissed that I missed LP’s Projekt Revolution tour. And whatever happened to Crazy Town? I loved that song “Butterfly”)

Marc Anthony - Jun 2000 (A former coworker of mine got front row. I’ve never been front row, so of course I had to go)

Counting Crows and Live - Oct 2000 (Live is #2 on my Fav Bands List. I was shocked when they opened up for CC, instead of the other way around. It worked out fine for me, cuz I got to see who I wanted to see first..and then leave)

All That Music and More Festival featuring LFO - Jul 2000 (There were a bunch of other kiddie-teenybopper type bands at this thing, but I was there to see LFO. Devin Lima in particular. I had a serious love jones for him. He sounded a lot like Bryan Abrams from Color Me Badd. Sexy men, sexy voices. Yow!)

Third Eye Blind - Aug 2000

Creed - Sep 2000 (Collective Soul opened up for them. This was another of my favorite groups back then and even though the guys are no longer together, Scott Stapp made a great solo album)

Stroke 9 - Jan 2000

First concert I ever attended:

Stevie Wonder. I was very, very young. Mom-dressed-us-in-matching-outfits-and-hairdos young.

Best concert I ever attended:

Lenny Kravitz. My then-boyfriend-now-hubby got us 4th row tickets off of EBay and I was smiling the whole time. Lenny was so amazing, he sang all the songs I wanted to hear, and it was just like listening to his CD, but live. Fantastic.

Concerts I attended but don’t remember when and can’t find the freakin’ ticket:

Gavin DeGraw - This white boy can SANG, people. He had every female in the room screaming like banshees–including me–when he performed Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”. I’m waiting with bated breath for his followup album.

Evanescence - You SO rock, Amy Lee!

Staind w/ Sevendust - Aaron (Staind lead singer) was having obvious throat problems. In between songs he was using throat spray. Lucky we knew all the songs. The next day, it was announced that he had to cancel some of his shows because he had polyps on his throat. And for the record, Sevendust has–had?–some good-lookin’ band members.

Phil Collins - He was the first artist I saw when Cricket Pavilion (now Desert Sky) opened. He has a lot of great songs, but I cried when he sang “Let it Rain.”

Deep Blue Something - “And I said what about breakfast at Tiffany’s…”

30 Seconds to Mars - #3 on My Fav Bands List. Actor Jared Leto’s band. I got a chance to meet him after the show. I got caught up in the tractor beam of his perfectly rounded blue eyes and said something corny like “I really loved you in My So-Called Life.” I totally forgot I had his movie, “Requiem for a Dream” in my car that I’d wanted him to sign. What I really wanted to say was, “So, what was it like getting the shit beat out of you by Ed Norton in Fight Club?”

Scott Stapp w/ Breaking Point - Great show by both artists. Scott played some old Creed favorites and sang one my fav songs off his solo album.

So…that’s it for me. I want to hear from all of you. Who have you seen in concert?

I didn’t realize how many I’ve been to until I went thru my little stack of tickets. I think I was making up for all the times my parents wouldn’t let me go to a concert during the week on a school night. LOL
