August 27, 2007 | Life in General,The 4-1-1 on Me
Did you all have a good weekend? Here’s the scoop on what I did:
1) Friday night, I met and had dinner with a new member of my local SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators). Marie’s new (and I mean extremely new) to the whole writing gig and she wanted to talk to someone who’s been published (albeit non-traditionally). She’s writing a series for the tween set based on her previous job as a Delta Airlines stewardess and needless to say, it’s going to do great in schools. We talked for 3 hrs! She had a lot of questions, I gave her advice, and, later on, emailed her a ton of info. It was great being able to “talk shop” with another creative person. I asked her how she found me and she told me that when she signed up, she went through all the Member Directory websites. She contacted me because (1) I’m local (in Phx as compared to Flagstaff) and (2) she wanted to talk to someone of color (she’s Filipino). I think there’s only 3 members “of color” and I’m pretty sure I’m the only member that writes YA. It was a great night and I made a new friend. One who happens to be a flamenco dancer. Very cool.
2) A bunch of us were supposed to hit up Water World on Saturday, but everyone bailed because some dork checked out the weather doppler and saw that it was going to be raining all day. I don’t know what city–or state, for that matter–he was looking at, but needless to say,we didn’t get a drop of rain. All day. At least, not in the area where the waterpark is located. I was so bummed about not going–even after breakfast at my fav place and a movie in the early afternoon–I was bumming out my hubby, too. So he suggested, real spontaneous like, that we “just go.” By ourselves. Right this minute. So we did. And had a blast. Even though we only stayed an hour. LOL. There’s only so many slides you can go down–with and without inner tubes–y’know?
3) The guy operating the drive-thru window at Whataburger made a pass at me in a not-so-subtle way:
“Can I get you to sign this (CC receipt) and include your address and phone number maybe we can get together for coffee sometime.” It was all rushed together. Just like that.
“Does that line work, like, ever?” I asked, laffing.
He shrugs. “I dunno. This is my first time using it,” he said.
“Uh-huh,” I said, still laughing.
“Doesn’t hurt to try,” he said with an aw-shucks shrug.
“No, no it doesn’t,” I replied.
“Come back again,” he said with a sly wink as he handed me my food.
I will. Because it’s right around the corner from our house, not becuz he works there. It’s nice to know that I’ve still got it, even with me being married, on the downhill slide to 40, and wearing a tank top, cotton biker shorts, and a do-rag on my head.
4) I added a couple of new links to my blogroll. I remember when adding new Characters required its own post, but that was so five minutes ago. Go on over and check’em out.
Book Divas - online book community specifically for young adults. I found this site on the Resources page at Agent Query
The Girl Hood – Trish Milburn, aka Trish Mills , is a fellow YA author and teenlitauthors forum member. I knew we were going to get along when she mentioned Clark Kent (Smallville) and those gorgeous Winchester brothers (Supernatural). We’re going to have plenty to talk about this fall.
So, that’s all for me. Inquiring minds want to know: What did you do this weekend?

Hey, thanks for the mention, Celise. I appreciate it. I’m going to check out Book Divas.
