September 2, 2007 | How coolio is THAT?, Life in General
The hubby and I did something spontaneous yesterday. We ate at Mr. Sushi with some friends ours (no, that’s not the spontaneous part), then instead of going to a pool party we had been invited to, we went with our dinner companions to see the Action Sports World Tour at Jobing.com Arena.
That was the spontaneous part.
Skateboard vert, BMX ramp and freestyle motorcross.
Very cool.
I didn’t know any of the BXM bikers, although one was representin’ Tempe. I didn’t know any of the motorcross guys, either, except that one was a hometown boy.
And the one name I recognized from the skaters was Bucky Lasek. For those of you that don’t know, he’s right up there with Tony Hawk. You guys have heard of him right? The youngest skater was 17, and the oldest (Bucky) was 34. 34! Unbelievable. In the sports that I love to watch–ice skating and gymnastics–at 34 you’ve had so many injuries and surgeries, you’ve been put back together with bionic parts. And long-since retired.
It got kinda boring towards the end, but the best part of the show was the freestyle motorcross guys. There were three of them and they would do these amazing stunts with their motorcycles: flips, hang off the back, no-handers, etc.
Major extreme sportage goin’ on and it was great. It was being televised and would later be played back on ABC, FOX and I think ESPN.
And no, you won’t see us frantically waving our hands at the camera. That’s not how we roll.
But it was fun.
