Movie Queue Double Feature: ‘No Reservations’ and ‘War’

September 3, 2007 | Uncategorized

Starring Jet Li and Jason Statham

After his partner is brutally murdered by the infamous assassin Rogue (Li), FBI agent Jack Crawford (Statham) vows to find the elusive killer and personally avenge his partner’s death. That proves difficult until three years later when he resurfaces to ignite a bloody turf war between a Chinese mob leader and a Japanese Yakuza boss.

First of all, I am a huge fan of both of these actors. I’ve always loved Jet Li (and not from his American movies, either. Check out Hero when you get a chance) and Jason Statham didn’t really do it for me until Transporter(I would also suggest seeing Crank. One word: Wow). When I saw trailers for this movie on Yahoo, I was totally stoked. I had high expectations for this movie and unfortunately, felt incredibly cheated when I saw it.

The storyline was good. I seriously wasn’t expecting the twist at the end. And the best fight scene wasn’t between Jason and Jet. In fact, their fight scene sucked. I was expecting a serious smackdown, an “epic” fight between a master martial artists and a professional martial artist. What I got were a few well-placed roundhouse kicks, a lot of tossing around, and some growly “hi-yas”. Yawn. Yawn.

This was highly disappointing.

Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, Abigail Breslin

Kate’s (Jones), a top notch chef, life is turned upside-down when she must take care of her niece, Zoe (Breslin), after her sister is killed. And sous-chef, Nick (Eckhart), invades her kitchen…and her life. This movie reminded me of Raising Helen (w/ Kate Hudson and John Corbet)…but it takes place in the kitchen instead of the fashion world. All the talk of food, and the making of the food, almost made me want to get in my own kitchen and cook. Almost. I was practically drooling when Nick showed up at their house to make dinner (homemade pizza) and he brought a WHOLE TUPPERWARE CONTAINER FULL OF TIRAMISU! I wanted to slap Kate upside the head when she said, “I don’t do dessert.” You don’t do dessert? It’s tiramisu, bee-yotch, are you high? And it looked homemade, too! I would’ve hip-bumped her out of the way and said, “That’s all right, girlfren’, that means for me.”

Abigail Breslin is cute and heartwrenching with her big blue eyes (I hate it when kids lose their parents–or parent–and have struggle/rebel thru the loss). She’s got potential, but she’s no Dakota Fanning. And Aaron Eckhart is a hottie. Catherine looks beautiful as usual, although I didn’t quite understand her character’s reasoning for hiding behind food. There were hints of a not-so-sparkly home life (she was seeing a therapist), but there was never a definitive answer.
