A lot excited, but more freaked out

September 18, 2007 | Life in General, The 4-1-1 on Me

Dear Blogger Friends,

I got this in my email yesterday:

I am writing for L Elementary in LP, Arizona. We are putting
on a Young Author’s Week February 25th-29th. We would be very interested in having
you speak. If you could let me know your rates and if you are available that would
be great!

Hope to hear from you soon…

Here’s my dilemma:

1) Um…I write for teens. I’m not sure she knows this–and what would I talk about?– because…

2) This request came from a 3rd grade teacher who has no idea that…

3) I’ve never done a speaking engagement IN MY ENTIRE LIFE AS AN AUTHOR and therefore…

4) Have no idea what to charge or how I should go about figuring that out.

Suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

As would half a Valium for my nerves. Thank you.

Sincerely,

A lot excited, but more freaked out

I think you should go for it, although I am at a loss for what to suggest you do about the whole grade 3 thing - I don’t know what to say to grade 3s. If it helps you at all; grade 3’s are the new grade 6. Ya. And 14 year olds are the new 17 year olds. That’s how it works these days!! Everyone acts older then they should!

I think you should totally do it. First you should ask this teacher for more information, so you know what you’ll talk about or if you want to. I think it’s a great opportunity and it could be a good experience. =)
