Thanks for joining me for Day Four of Teen Read Week. Today is normally Bookworm Wednesday and how fitting that we have another book review: A NOVEL IDEA by Aimee Friedman. Enter to win a free copy of this book by answering a question at the end.

BLURB:

Required reading has never been so hot.

Once upon a time there was a Brooklyn hipster named Norah. Unlucky in love, and short on extracurriculars for her college apps, Norah decided to start a book group. She knew the perfect locale — a local indie bookstore with a crush-worthy cutie manning the soy latte counter.

When the first meeting arrives, Norah gets a page-turning surprise. The attendees may be bookish, but there are also a few hotties! Most noteworthy: sweet, literary James. He’s like a modern Jane Austen hero…. Only, how to snag him?

Ever the romantic heroine, Norah devises a secret plan. And if it works, Norah may just find her “Happily Ever After” love story. The End.

If Park Slope, Brooklyn really exists, I want to live there! Even though I said I want to retire to Catalina Island, I’ve changed my mind. Totally. Park Slope is the place for me. I want to get my read on in Prospect Park. I want to haunt a cozy place like the Book Nook (wait, a place like that already exists here), although, if I remember right, no guys as hot as Griffin work there. And I totally want to have a reclusive yet famous author like Philippa Askance (love that last name!) living in my neighborhood.

I loved everything about this book. I connected with Norah right away because I too am a voracious reader; though not much of an equal opportunity one. I tend to stick to adult romance books even as I’m trying to fit more fiber (read: YA books) into my reading diet. Norah’s best friends remind me of Draven’s best friends (except Poe is less about fashion sense and more about layering); and the idea of a book club as an extracurricular activity never would’ve occurred to me when I was in high school (adult romance books had me in their grip even then). You can bet I never in a million years would have the nerve to do what Norah did to get her crush to notice her. There’s a reason why fiction is called fiction.

I laughed, winced, and finally cheered when Norah finally got her man. I’m looking forward to reading Aimee’s other books.

  1. Trish Milburn says:

If it were a YA book club, I’d probably start out with either Twilight or A Great and Terrible Beauty. If it were non-YA, wow, so many great books to choose from. I really love J.R. Ward’s books, so perhaps Dark Lover.

  2. Emily M. says:

Good question. Maybe The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. That seems like a good discussion book!

    Hey Celise,
I’d love to start a book club. I’d suggest My Sister’s Keeper or The Love Pact, both by Jodie Picoult. Both of these books are emotionally confronting and would be great to discuss the characters, events and decisions. They are also books that one doesn’t forget easily, and very enjoyable reads.

PS: One entry - is that overall, or per day? Thanks!

  4. Celise says:

Just a Girl - it’s one entry per day. So, if you missed the first three days, you can still go back and answer questions

  5. Stephanie Armstrong says:

If i were to start a YA book club i’d start with Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters because it’s my favourite book and i don’t think enough teens have been exposed to GLBT literature.
