Weekend Wrap-Up

March 10, 2008 | Book Stuff, Calendar of Events, Life in General, Music Queue, The 4-1-1 on Me, Weekend Wrap-Up

The big news this weekend was my author visit at the Page Public Library in Page, AZ Saturday afternoon. I had a great time, even though I was a tad nervous. I spoke to a full house of mostly 6th and 7th graders with a couple of teachers thrown in. The students made feel like such a celebrity when they asked me to sign my bookmarks.

A wonderful young adult by the name of Alex really made my day being the first eager audience member to arrive and telling me she’s always wanted to meet an author. She was the only student who asked questions, too! Thanks Alex! I can’t wait to see your work.

I think everyone was a bit shy, which is probably why they came up afterwards. I even gave one lucky entrant a chance to win a Purse Charmer set (two SassyPurseCandy.com keychains, and two charmers for their phone). By the time I got home, Alex had already posted a comment on my Author Visit post on Friday and another member of the audience contacted me through my website. I look forward to seeing your poems, Shaylynn.

Being born and raised in one place most of your life sometimes makes you forget what your state has to offer. I was reminded once again during our road trip to Page. I’ve never been to Page (heck, there are a lot of towns I haven’t been to in AZ), but it’s located on the northern most tip of AZ. It’s 76 miles from the AZ/UT border.

And I have never seen more beautiful scenery in all my life.

The hubby and I decided that the next time I get invited up there, we’re going to take the day off and play tourist. The town is famous for the Glen Canyon Dam–something we were partially able to see by looking out the lobby window of our hotel. Geez, and wait till you see the view from the room where I spoke. Abso-freakin’-lutely breathtaking. I could totally be content reading a book in that room.

As beautiful as Page is, I’m definitely a city woman. I could not handle a movie theater that 1) only shows two movies at a time and 2) doesn’t show current releases. The hubby couldn’t quite believe it, either. He kept thinking there had to be another theater. I had to keep reminding him “We’re in a small town, hon. There are not going to be any AMC 14 theaters here.” Although we were told an IMAX would be making its way there soon.

And I don’t remember seeing a Barnes and Noble, either. As much as I lived in the public library during high school, I now prefer to buy my books new.

But they had a Super Walmart and a couple of major grocery stores. Which is always a plus.

I would just want to say thanks again to Debbie Winlock, Library Director, for finding me through Google and inviting me to come out. I look forward to doing it again soon.

On Sunday, I spent a good portion of the day in a movie theater. I saw 10,000 B.C. and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. The first one was okay. I came away with two new names to add to my list of Boys and Girls Names; D’Leh and Evolet. Very unique, if I do say so myself. I like that. LOVED the second movie. I’m diggin’ that actress Amy Adams. She kinda reminds me of Goldie Hawn. Y’know, that flighty, ditzy, totally clueless-but-not personality? It seems to work for her. If you saw Enchanted–and liked it–then you’ll like Miss Pettigrew. I haven’t seen any of her other stuff, so I don’t know what her acting range is (anybody wanna clue me in?). Amazingly enough, the whole movie takes place in one day. Hence the name.

Oh, and Frances McDormand was faboo as Miss Pettigrew.

Whew! That’s it for me. How was your weekend?

You might have been nervous–but you looked gorgeous! Love the hat! BTW, I have a good friend who writes YA novels and yesterday, she received her first fan mail on an ARC.
