No more immortals

May 24, 2008 | Uncategorized

A couple of days ago, Yahoo had a listing of 39 shows that were being cancelled. That’s a lot of shows! I was hoping that none of the ones I watched were a part of that. For the record, Heroes, Supernatural, Bones, and Smallville are safe.

Unfortunately, Moonlight
and New Amsterdam were not.

For those of you that have never heard of the shows, let me explain:

Moonlight is about Mick St. John, a PI who happens to be a vampire, who happens to fall for a mortal named Beth, a reporter for this online news show called Buzzwire. It’s a cross between Angel and Forever Knight. For the record, no show about a gorgeous vampire will ever top Angel. David Boreanaz was The Vamp and he will always be The Vamp. Although Alex O’Loughlin made a handsome vampire, no one will ever take the place of David. Beth eventually found out what he was, she eventually figured out that he saved her as a child from his deranged wife and sire, and he became mortal again…if only for an episode or two (which I missed, goddammit!). I was really liking this show and was hoping to see how the romance played out between them.

New Amsterdam is a modern twist off that show The Highlander (another one of my favorite shows. Adrian Paul was hot). John Amsterdam (played by gorgeous Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) is a New York homicide detective…who’s 400 years old. In the late 1600’s, during an attack on a Native American village, John took a spear in the heart to save a woman. As a thank you, they made him immortal until his one true love could make him mortal again. One of the many things I liked about this show (besides the obvious eye candy with a very, very slight accent that slipped in every once in a while) was that in his lifetime, John has seen and done many things. He’s had 63 children (one of whom is African-American and knows his secret), numerous wives and has seen New York grow to what it is today. Each episode, viewers were given a glimpse into his past lives–depending on what kind of case he was working on and how it triggered the memory–and his little quips about New York’s history dropped into normal conversation were always a treat.

Cancelled after only 8 episodes (oh, the injustice!), I was really hoping this would be played out and we’d get to see him end up with his one true love. During the course of the episodes I saw, it looked like he thought he did. But nothing changed.

I will really miss these shows and hope that they will try this genre again soon.

Shenell - I think you’re doing a great job with the writing. Keep up the great work.

Cate - It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Bones is on Monday nites. Heroes was on Monday nites, too, so maybe they’ll make it a back-to-back show in the fall. Before it was cancelled, New Amsterdam came on before Bones. Smallville and Supernatural are on Thursday nites, back to back. Moonlight was on Friday nites, before it was cancelled. Oh, and I’ve been watching The Tudors on Sunday nites. LOL. Yeah, I guess it does sound kind of crazy, doesn’t it?
