I went from nearly 10 good pages back down to 7. Possibly less now because I’ll have to change some things. Truly, this is ridiculous. It sucks.
I was reminded today why I don’t like writing short stories. A co-worker of mine—who knows nothing of writing world, Thank God—asked me a ton of questions about what I’d written so far. I’m having a hard time finishing it—because really, how hard can it be to write 13 effing pages?—and she wanted to know why I was stuck. So I told her.
And now I’m going to have to go back and rewrite.
“Looks like you’re going to have to map out this story,” she said.
For the first time ever, I’m going to have to map out a story. Normally, I just write and see what happens.
That’s not going to work this time. DAMN. IT!
Have I mentioned that I was never good at writing short stories? I’m pretty sure I’ve whined about this before. I’m not used to ending a story after only 13 pages. In my normal novella/novel-length world, 13 pages wouldn’t be a problem.
Writing this short story is becoming a problem.
It should be easy: How Draven Atreides became an informant for the FBI. Simple, right? For all you short story writers out there, sure. No heckling, please. I’m not in the mood.
Please send more creative writing vibes.
