One of the activities for this class that I just turned in was called the “Six Serving Men”.
Read the “Six Serving-Men”. Placing your competence in the center, do the Six Serving-Men activity to explore the many facets of your field. From the rich cluster of elements you generate, create the following lists (as one Word file).
Your document should include:
* Proactive/key questions you will want to answer to become a practioner in the field.
* Necessary personal skills.
* Prospective mentors in your community.
* Possible sources of information.
The idea is to ask the Who, What, Where, When, Why, How questions about your competence and then come up with some answers. I found this activity to be both difficult and helpful. Difficult in the way that I’m very new to the field of non-profit and I found myself saying “I don’t know yet” and “I’ll be exploring this during second semester” quite a bit. I had to get some help from another co-worker, just to see if maybe there was some other type of question I should be asking.
Helpful in the way that I found other topics that can be explored. I will be taking “NonProfit Explorations” (a self-designed course) next semester, so I have a feeling that some of those “I don’t know yets” will be answered at that time.
I really am a newbie in this field and I’m hoping that, when I graduate in Dec 2011, I will be capable enough to open my own non-profit.
