Sunday Scribblings #198

January 17, 2010 | Life in General,Sunday Scribblings,The 4-1-1 on Me

Today’s word of the day is brought to you by Sunday Scribblings: The Good Ol’ Days

I was born and raised here in Phoenix, but when I was young, my Dad’s job transferred us to Reno, Nevada. I don’t exactly remember how old I was, but I was young. I remember attending 3rd, 4th and 5th grade there.

The good ol’ days to me was living on Warren Way for 5 1/2 years.

Our neighborhood was a family neighborhood. There were 2-3 kids per household. Well, except for the Hoadleys. They had 6 kids and they were foster parents on top of that. My best friend, Amy, lived across the street.

My godparents, the Ritter’s, lived next door, and the Rogers’ lived next door to them; my other best friend, Laura, lived there. She had a really cool collection of Strawberry Shortcake dolls. LOL. A few doors down from the Rogers, were the Rahn’s. My other best friend, Ken, lived there. And we’re still friends to this day. Farther up the street were the Mooney’s, and the house at the very end of the dead end street lived the Barranca’s. I always thought their older brother, Nick, was pretty hot. LOL.

I’m missing a couple of the other family’s that lived on that street. The Pearson’s had two sons, Mike and David. David was my age and we–me, him, and Ken–went to the same school, but they never got along. And I never hung out with David. There was another family with two girls, but they weren’t my age.

I was baptized at the church.

I was Brownie. And then a Girl Scout.

I remember having a crush on Chris Tiller.

And Ken had a crush on Randi Smith. Her father happened to be my dentist. Hah.

I remember my babysitter Big Emily (no, she wasn’t fat) and her cute boyfriend, Dean, and dancing to The Go-Go’s in the living room. She and her boyfriend took my sister and I to the pool one time. We rode in her convertible Bug, the wind in our faces, and I remember thinking “This is SO cool.”

I remember attending Huffaker Elementary School, and the field trips to the roller rink or the bowling alley at MGM. I remember riding my Big Wheel up and down the sidewalk, my bright yellow and blue roller skates, and going to the park at Lakeside Dr.

I remember being rear-ended while riding home on the school bus, and of my sister witnessing one of her friends’ being hit by a car while waiting for the bus one morning (she survived).

I remember being excited about ice skating lessons, thinking I’d be the next Dorothy Hamill. Until I fell and hit the back of my head on the ice on the first day. FAIL! Now, I just watch it on t.v. LOL.

I remember my Mom making our clothes, dressing us alike and having the same hair do as my older sister. I remember our tabby cat, Tabitha (how original) and her brother George living next door.

I remember my godmother teaching me how to ride a bike for the first time. Me flying down the street.

Pool parties at the Hoadleys.

Shared birthday parties with those little cups of ice cream you eat with the wooden spoon…

There was so much. I’m surprised I remembered all of that, but really, it was hard not to. It was the best childhood of my entire life. We moved back here during the summer and I started 6th grade.

5 1/2 years on Warren Way. Yeah, those were the good ol’ days

What a host of reminiscences! This is a fantastic start to your own biography that can be expanded at will. Looking forward to more elaborations.

Old Egg – Yeah, I still can’t believe I remembered all that. Then again, I’m not surprised. That was such a happy time for me, I can’t believe I wouldn’t remember all those memories. I don’t think I’ll ever do an autobiography, but it always makes for good writing material. LOL.
