Finally got around to redeeming the $25 iTunes card Babendude got me for my b-day. Downloaded some good stuff:

An oldie but a goodie – “Lonely Teardrops” by Jackie Wilson

Some alternative – “Hero” by Skillet, “Dragonfly” by Shaman’s Harvest, “Cry Little Sister” by Seasons After, “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Firestarter” by Prodigy, “She Talks To Angels” by The Black Crowes

A few Big Hair Bands – “18 and Life” and “I Remember You” by Skid Row, “Wait” and “When the Children Cry” by White Lion, “Nobody’s Fool” by Cinderella

A little 80’s and 90’s – “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor, “Listen to Your Heart” and “Dressed for Success” by Roxette, “How to Be a Millionaire” and “Be Near Me” by ABC, “Informer” by Snow, “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice.

Some show tunes – “Poker Face,” “Dream On”, and “To Sir With Love” by the Glee Cast

And an instrumental – “Requiem for a Tower Dream” by London Music Works and Clint Mansell (if you heard it, you’d recognize it. They play it a lot in movie trailers.)

I figured it was time to get some new tunes in the iPod. All the other stuff was getting a little stale. The majority of my music came from my CD collection, with several downloads thrown in for good measure. I keep it on shuffle so I can hear a different mix of music, but the same artists keep coming up a lot (probably because I have multiple albums). Hence the need for some new stuff.

There are tons more songs I want to get, and I’ve quickly learned how addicting iTunes can be. I went a little crazy with my first iPod (8GB…Babendude upgraded me to a 16GB for my b-day) and racked up a nice $80 bill in one day! Utter craziness, I tell you. As you can tell, I listen to a variety of music, with a few exceptions: No jazz (although I have one song by Michael Buble…and I have it because it sounds like a James Bond song), no country, and no every-other-word-is-a-curse-word type of rap.

So, who’s on your iPod?

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday. It was our first Christmas without my sister and B-I-L here, but we got a chance to speak with them. And we’re visiting them for a week at the end of Feb, so I’m very excited. Mr. Maul and I went to my parents house for breakfast and my niece and nephew were already there. It was good to see them. I live closer to my niece than my nephew and I’ve seen him more in the past two months than I’ve seen him all year! He just lives so far away (over an hr), it’s like a road trip to see him. Anyhoo, let me expound on all the goodies I received.

From Mr. Maul – bought me an iPod nano. I love it. For the past few days, I’ve been downloading onesie-twosie songs—from artists like Papa Roach, Coolio, Blur, Michael Buble, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Faith No More, Course of Nature, and Chris Cornell– as well as downloading certain CD’s from my huge collection. I don’t plan on downloading ALL my music, just the stuff I’ve been listening to lately and stuff I’d like to have on there (like all my Linkin Park and Live CD’s). When I got it, he had already downloaded songs from GLEE. Whoo-hoo! I also downloaded new Creed and plan to download new Gavin DeGraw and 30 Seconds to Mars. Needless to say, it takes longer for whole albums to download. Especially if there’s a lot of songs. One of the many things I love about this little gadget is that I can listen to my favorite radio station while I’m at work…and I can record video. I got some footage of my niece teaching her brother how to tango. LOL. Funny.

From my parents – a trip to Orlando for a week. We’re going to visit my sis. Thank God for timeshare. My parents and nephew are going too and my parents paid for lodging and airfare. The most expensive part! I’m looking forward to the mini-vacay. I’ve never been to Orlando, but it’s been on my list of Places to Visit.

From Elissa – Mr. Maul’s best friend’s wife bought me a lotto ticket, a little bottle of Sea Island Cotton body lotion from Bath and Body Works, a gift card to The Body Shop and a $25 AMC movie card. She took our Halloween pic and somehow put it on the AMC card so it looks like we’re on the big screen. Very cool. We spent nearly all of it when we saw AVATAR in 3D opening weekend.

From my nephew – ROLE MODELS DVD (unrated version), Slinky Jr and a little popcorn cup.

From my niece – Tther than a little container full of baked goodies, I’m not sure yet. She left my gift at home! *rolls eyes*. She remembered Mr. Maul’s gift, but not mine. Go figure.

From Lisa – my coworker got me a sweater to wear at work. It gets cold in my area and I wore my other one so much, I wore a hole in the elbow and had to throw it away. I was bummed.

While we were at my parents house, my niece decided to pull out some old photo albums. It was a walk down memory lane that was highly enjoyable. And entertaining. Thought I might share a few with you all:

I was in high school when I decided to be a Harlequin clown for Halloween one year. Mike, my BFF at the time, wasn’t diggin’ it because he had–still has, I think–a thing about clowns ever since he saw Stephen King‘s IT. LOL

This is me and my sister. I’m the baby. We’re two years and two days apart, in case you were wondering. Not sure when this was taken, but it looked like I was having a grand ol’ time, yeah?

This is my version of the naked-baby-on-a-bearskin-rug picture. LOL. That’s me. Shirtless. Hangin’ out in rollers. When my sister was a senior in high school, we got in a car accident together and totaled the LTD you see in the background there. We used to call it the S.S. Downs. LOL.

This is me, my Dad and my sister. The time frame must’ve been while I was going to ASU. I can tell because I’m wearing my ASU class ring (even though I never graduated from there).

And there you have it. A little peek into the family album. During the weekend we went to see SHERLOCK HOLMES, which, surprisingly, was quite good. Robert Downey, Jr. looked great during the fight scenes and it’s funny how his hair always seemed to have a just-shocked look to it. LOL. We also watched KNOWING and (500) DAYS OF SUMMER. I’d wanted to see KNOWING (with Nicholas Cage) in the movie theater, but never got a chance. It was an interesting take on the end-of-the-world themes.

So, that’s it for me. How was your holiday weekend? What’d you get?

When we have 3-day weekends, I always feel a little off. Case in point: I went out to the mailbox and left some mail for the carrier to pick up.

It was Sunday.

For some reason, I thought it was Saturday. Go figure.
Mr. Maul and I went to the movies three days in a row. We saw GAMER, EXTRACT and ALL ABOUT STEVE. Interesting concept about GAMER: people playing people. Gerard Butler was in a game called “Slayers”, but they also had a video game called “Society” that was a real-life version of The Sims. Those are the type of video games I would not want to play. And how about Michael C. Hall (DEXTER) playing a real bad guy? I say real because in DEXTER, he’s a bad guy, but for the good of the public. There was even a funny little dance scene and a surprising—not to mention interesting—cameo from Milo Ventimiglia (HEROES) as a character in “Society”. Saw a couple of good previews, too. One was called NINJA ASSASSIN. And for the life of me, I can’t think of the other one. We saw a preview for A CHRISTMAS CAROL and surprisingly, Mr. Maul wants to see it.

For the record, I had no interest whatsoever in seeing EXTRACT. He had mentioned the movie in passing, saying one if his friends thought it was good. Needless to say, it came as a surprise when we walked up to the window and he said “2 for EXTRACT.”

“EXTRACT? We’re not seeing EXTRACT, we’re seeing ALL ABOUT STEVE.” I said.

“I thought we were seeing EXTRACT. I mentioned that Travis thought it was good,” he says.

“It was a comment you made in passing, Mr. Maul. You said nothing about actually wanting to see it.”

I went along with it, but I was seriously pissed. I think he has little conversations with me in his mind. Maybe he told my “imaginary self” that he wanted to see that movie–or had thought about seeing it–and just forgot to tell me in real life. It was okay, some parts were funny, but I would’ve enjoyed it more if I hadn’t been so pissed. We stopped by Target afterwards and I made him buy me a CD.

Tantric has a new CD out called “Mind Control”. I love Hugo’s deep voice. I have song #6, “Kick Back“, on repeat. I like the chorus:

Show me to rise/rise above/show me how to rise, remember how to love, yourself

And the chorus overlay:

When life is kicking you kick back, don’t be a victim of the mistakes that were made when you were growing up, a young child not taught to be an adult, raise your arms you’re free, don’t have to give it up

Very cool CD. I give it 4 1/2 Snaps.

It’s the second week of school and that overwhelming feeling I got last week is now down to a dull ache. I know what I’m going to be writing about for my Diagnostic Essay and I have a topic idea for my research paper. I’ve told myself to take it one week at a time. It’s the only way that’s going to save me, truly. No more looking ahead. My co-workers and my family are going to see a different side of me as it is, thanks to the schedule I’ll be keeping. No need to freak them out even more, eh? So, uh, yeah. Here we go. Be sure to check out my “learning journals” over at Non-Profitation.

Writing Movements – Still waiting to get a quote from an editor regarding Book One. Hopefully, I’ll be able to send it out the first or second week of October. Revising Book Two has been shelved for the moment until I can get into the School Groove. I’ve been writing content for the Draven site (3 quizzes, actually). I’m in the design queue for the end of Sept, beginning of Oct. Not sure when I’ll start the podcasting, but I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

So, that was my holiday weekend. How was yours?

Saturday morning, I spent the better part of the day with my BF. I’d received some info from Prescott College last week. Even though I’m not jumping into my chosen subject right away, they’re already asking you to come up with a tentative course title and flesh out your first mentored class. I was feeling a little anxious about that, so she did a reading. It was very positive. After that, we were able to come up with some ideas. So, first semester will be Math and that Interdisciplinary course (which will basically introduce me to the program), but I guess for second semester, my tentative course title is “Non-Profit Exploration”: Through research, hands-on projects, and interviews I’ll learn what a non-profit is, how to start an NP, and why people go into the NP sector.

Part of the class will be the process of sharing my findings and my wonderful BF suggested a blog. Well, duh. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that first. So, later on that day, I created a blog (Non-Profitation) that will chronicle my journey in getting my degree. I’ll be talking about school a little bit on here, but the bulk of it will be on this new blog. Feel free to follow along if you like. I’ll be posting the link to it in my posts here, whenever I talk about school. Right now, there’s only an introduction, but the real posts will start this weekend (when I attend a volunteer orientation at a local NP) and move forward with college orientation at the end of the month.

Saturday night, Mr. Maul and I attended a surprise going away party for one of our DSG guys. He enlisted in the Army and will be gone for 5 months starting Sept 1st. We had a blast. I didn’t get in the pool, though. Spent most of my time on land, talking about TRUEBLOOD. One of our Biker Scout dudes is a big fan like we are. I think he’s going to be Eric for Halloween this year. He told me I should be Tara. LOL. Apparently, the HBO store has shirts that say Merlotte’s and he thinks I should get one. LOL. I don’t know if I’m going to have my braids then, but it’s an idea. I don’t think I want to be Storm again.

Mr. Maul and I went to see G.I. JOE on Sunday. The best thing about that movie was the shirtless shot of Channing Tatum. Seriously. It didn’t help that the auditorium we were in had projector issues during the first few minutes of a new Denzel Washington movie. It had that post-apocalyptic, Mad Max feel to it. If you saw it, hit me up in the comments section and gimme the deets on that. It looked interesting. Anyhoo, the mgr came in and said they were having projector issues and that it would be a few minutes. He came back 5 mins later and said the issue was beyond their control and we were being moved into another auditorium. It was smaller, and, major disappointment of disappointments, they didn’t show the same previews! Which I totally didn’t get.

Do they show different previews in different auditoriums? If you work at movie theater and know the answer to this question, hit me up in the comments, because I’d seriously like to know. The hubby and I were a little miffed that we didn’t get to see that Denzel preview. And that we had to sit a few seats down from two teenage boys who reeked of smoke. Blech!

In the end, we got a free popcorn coupon for our trouble. Mr. Maul wanted to get a ticket refund and go another time, but I talked him into staying. Now that I think about it, we should have. We could’ve gone after I got back from Volunteer orientation and seen that preview. Not that I’m bitter about that, mind you.

Writing Movements – I’m still looking for beta readers to read Book One. If you’re interested, check out the deets HERE. I’ve sent it two people and only one has responded so far with comments. They’ve been minor, but I haven’t made any changes yet. I won’t do so until I send it to an editor. I’m waiting to hear from one who’s been on vacay last week.

Finally listened to the TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN soundtrack. Not as good as the first one, but I like the new song from Linkin Park –of course—as well as the songs from Green Day (21 Guns) and Staind (This is It). The theme song, a remix from Cheap Trick, royally sucked. Wasn’t too impressed. Should’ve ixnayed Nickelback, too. I totally skipped that song. But, The Used did a great rendition of Talking Head’s “Burnin’ Down the House.”

And, of course, there’s the requisite laundry day. 3 loads. I hate doing laundry. I wish I was rich enough to have someone else do it. So, how was your weekend?

The best kind of music is the kind you can play over and over.

During lunch today, a co-worker and I hit up Target. I got a Betty Boop messenger bag for school (it’s only for orientation, but still…) and a couple of new CD’s. I haven’t listened to the TRANSFORMERS 2 soundtrack yet, but when I got back to work, I popped in the new SHINEDOWN, The Sound of Madness.

Just like their previous CD, “Us and Them”, there. Is. Not. One. Bad. Song. I don’t skip over any of them. Right now, my favorite radio station—98 KUPD—has the first three songs on rotation: “Devour”, “Sound of Madness” and “Second Chance”.

My favorite songs:

#2 – Sound of Madness
#5 – The Crow and The Butterfly
#8 – What a Shame
#11 – Call me

I’ve played #5 and #8 at least 4-5 times. A piece. I think my absolute favorite is “The Crow and The Butterfly.” A song about loss and regret–my impression–it’s beautifully written and you can hear the emotion in Brent’s voice when he sings.

I think the lyrics from “What a Shame” are so amazingly powerful

“What a shame/what a shame/To judge a life/That you can’t change/The choir sings/The church bells ring/So won’t you give this man his wings/What a shame/To have to beg you to see/We’re not all the same/What a shame.”

And I like these lines from “Sound of Madness”

“I created the sound of madness/Wrote the book on pain/Somehow I’m still here to explain/That the darkest hour/Never comes in the night.”

Really cool song title: “Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide”

And I loved this quote on the back of the inside jacket: “You can’t kill me with kindness. I don’t buy it.”

If you’re a fan of this group, go buy the new CD now. Go. Buy. Now.

Review: 5 Snaps Up

Ok, not really, but Mr. Maul and I went to see Beyonce in concert last night here at the US Airways Center.

“Best. Concert. Ever.” His words.

“Well, she’ll never be accused of lip-synching.” My words.

We had good seats, Section B, Row 8. And yes, we were close enough to see her sweat…and any wardrobe malfunctions that might have occurred (but didn’t). I think he might’ve liked to have been in the Diva Zone (an area on either side of the stage that was standing room only. Possibly occupied by radio contest winners and people with connections) because he might’ve gotten a chance to touch her.

She puts on a really great show. She has great choreography, too. There were a couple of songs that I wish she had sung, but they ended up in a little video montage interlude moment.

My favorite song is “Halo” which she saved for the encore–and used it as a dedication to Michael Jackson. I also like “I Think I’m in Love w/ my Radio” (which she sang) and “Hello” (which she also sang). During “Ave Maria“, she incorporated a couple of lines from “Angel” my Sarah McLachlan. Also, during “If I was a Boy”, she incorporated a few lines from “You Oughtta Know” by Alanis Morrisette (which was totally awesome).

Her dancers were fabtastic and I liked the fact that she has an all-female band. Who got to show off their stuff during a costume change. All in all, it was a great show. But Mr. Maul no longer wants to attend concerts. He says it’s too much of a hassle.

I was hoping he’d go with me to see Creed, but…

Michael Jackson is dead.

I’m still finding this hard to believe. Funny how you think someone will live forever.

I can’t say that I was ever a huge fan (my sister was, though), nor did I buy any of his albums, but I loved his music. All the songs that he put out, from the time he was young, to the popular ones in the 80′s.

My Dad taught me how to moonwalk on the kitchen floor when I was young.

When I was in middle school, my Dad had gotten us tickets to see him in concert…but it never happened. He ended up cancelling for some reason. Don’t remember why. My sister was devastated. I imagine all the people who’d bought tickets for his upcoming concert will be devastated, too. I wonder how much they paid?

Despite the scandals, Michael was a fabulous entertainer. He had great songs and outstanding dance moves.

Rest in peace, Michael. You will be deeply missed.

He had a lot of great songs, but I think I’ll always be partial to “Man in the Mirror.”

What’s your favorite Michael Jackson song?

I know. I’m on a roll today with these Random Thought posts, but this is the last one for today. I swear.

About a month ago, I bought the TWILIGHT double disc DVD. I know, I finally got with the program–what?–a year later. They aren’t even showing this movie on the cable channels yet and the new one is coming out soon. Anyhow, in watching the extra features DVD, they showed a video of my favorite group, Linkin Park! I had no idea they were on the soundtrack! This group is makin’ the rounds with the soundtracks, let me tell ya. I just heard their new song for the TRANSFORMERS 2 movie, “New Divide“….aaaaaaand I love it, of course.

But I digress.

Yesterday–we’re still talking Sunday here–Mr. MMA and I stopped by Best Buy so he could get ENTER THE DRAGON on Blueray and he asked me if I wanted anything. I have a whole list of CD’s I want, but I chose the TWILIGHT soundtrack.

The CD jacket turns into an actual poster of Edward and Bella and if I were a <del datetime="2009-06-23T01:38:33+00:00">freak </del> fan of the movie/books, I would put it up in my cubie at work or something.

But I’m not. So I didn’t.

It’s going to stay as a CD jacket.

I bought it because 1) I’m a GINORMOUS fan of Linkin Park and the song on the CD is on their best-album-ever and 2) because Rob Pattinson has a song on their, too, and I wanted to hear what he sounded like.

I was a little disappointed. Not in Rob’s song, which is actually quite beautiful (he sounds like someone I’ve heard before, but I can’t put my finger on it), but the CD as a whole. In my opinion, there are only 4 good songs on here:

#1
#2
#4
#10
#12

I also like songs by Collective Soul, but I wasn’t too impressed with their contribution this time (#7). I guess I like their old stuff better. All in all, I’m tempted to just download the other three songs and exchange the CD for something else. I dunno. Maybe the soundtrack for NEW MOON will be better.

Rating: 3 Snaps

For snippets of the songs, go HERE.

What’s your ringtone? Do you have more than one? Why did you choose it?

General Public: “Bleed It Out” by Linkin Park - Well, duh, they’re my favorite band.

Hubby: “Duel of the Fates” by ? (don’t know if it’s by the same guy): Darth Maul. Star Wars. I’ve told you the stories already.

Sister: “Do It To It” by ? – I don’t remember the name of the group but it was a girl group (sisters I think) and it started with a C. I chose it because I could picture her shaking her shoulders to it. And it was time for a new song. The other one used to be “Move (Get Out The Way)” by Ludacris.

Niece: “Milkshake” by Kelis – Very sassy song and my niece is a very sassy young woman. And, really, her milkshakes could bring all the boys to the yard. She’s currently got a good one.

BF Amy: “Bodicea” by Enya – cuz she’s become a very New Age-y person.

BF Ken: “Getting Away With Murder” by Papa Roach - no, he’s never done time. But it’s a hard, rockin’ song that seemed to fit my motorcycle-ridin’ buddy of 20-some years.

Parental Units: “Tears of a Clown” by Smokey and the Miracles - Because I grew up listening to Motown and I always associate that type of music with them.

Your turn.
