This week’s question: Compare your first kiss with your favorite characters first kiss

Well, my favorite character is Draven, and seeing as how she hasn’t had her first kiss yet, that’s not gonna help for this post. Ironically, or not, my first kiss was much like Skylar’s in my first book, SECRETS AND KISSES. Granted, I didn’t check out a how-to book from the library like she did, but I sure as hell wanted to. LOL. If the special moment ever came around, I was afraid I wouldn’t know how to do it. I crushed on so many guys during high school, but never dated. African Americans were the minority at my school, and while I was all down with the whole interracial thing, not too many guys at my high school were. At least, I don’t think they were.

My first kiss was with my first boyfriend, whom I didn’t meet until I started community college. He was white and kinda had the whole free-spirit-Brad-Pitt-in-Legends-of-The-Fall thing goin’ on. It must’ve not been that memorable because I don’t remember when it first happened or my reaction.

Topic #56:How do you pick our titles?

When I write books, I normally have a title and character names chosen. Titles always come to me first and then I write around that. Kinda weird, but it seems to work for me.

Simplistic as it is, if you read SECRETS AND KISSES and DANCE JAM PRODUCTIONS, you really will be reading about secrets, kissing lessons and a dance show. LOL. My stories tend to be like that. Now, the DA series is a little bit different. Kate Hart mentioned that her titles tend to have more than one meaning. I’m finding that the titles in the DA series are going to be like that. Book One, A ROYALE PAIN, refers to Draven’s first case involving a spa called The Royale Treatment Day Spa. But it also refers to what happens if you end up using a particular product from there. Book Two, THE FAMILY JEWELS, sounds like a porn movie—or an erotica novel—about male genitalia, doesn’t it? Yeah, no. In this case it’s just about a family of jewel thieves.

I think one of the best things about being writer is coming up with a title. What’s funny is that I have a list—somewhere—of book titles! They’re either a song title, a song lyric or a phrase I overheard that just stuck with me. But they all resonated with me somehow, so I wrote them down to use for later.

Now, if writing the actual story came just as easily, I’d be golden.

Topic #46: If you went to high school with your characters, would you be friends?

Hells to the yeah!

For the simple reason that each of my characters has a little bit of me in them, they’re “inspired by” someone I know, or they’re someone I wish I could be. In my first book, SECRETS AND KISSES, I would be Skylar Knight. Actually, I was her. I was shy, I crushed from afar, when I was her age I worried about not knowing how to kiss—okay, let me rephrase that. I didn’t worry about not knowing how to kiss until I actually started dating. Which was right around the time I entered community college. Back in high school, I just crushed from afar and didn’t worry about the kissing part because I was attracted to white guys and knew that no white guy would be interested in a black girl. That’s just how it was at my school. Especially when the ratio of minorities to whites was pretty slim. And, being the bookworm that I was back then (and currently still), I so would’ve checked out a kissing how-to book from the library. Skylar’s best friend, Ellie, kind of reminded me of Six. You know, Blossom’s best friend on that show “Blossom”? She’s funny, she’s bubbly, and knows when to give you a kick in the pants for being stupid. Or when you need to suck it up and put your Big Girl panties on.

Mataya Black Hawk in DANCE JAM PRODUCTIONS, my second book, is not so much shy as reserved (because of the secret she carries), and slow to trust people she first meets. But once you’re in her little circle (and it’s little. Tiny, really), you’re there forever and the loyalty is ironclad. Her two best friends, Mici and Ren, sort of balance her out. Ren’s a tomboy skater chick (but still a girly-girl) and Mici’s the feminine one, who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing baggy pants. There are differences, but the dynamics work.

My current series, DRAVEN ATREIDES, TEENAGE INFORMANT, Draven was inspired by my then 16-yr-old niece (she’s 21 now). She’s witty, independent, has a good head on her shoulders, and resourceful. She’s got to be because she’s leading a double life (Draven, not my niece). Her best friend, Rico, was inspired by an old high school friend of mine who “came out” during our senior year (luv ya, Michael). And OMG, he was hysterical. Hy. Sterical. He always had me crackin’ up, so I hope I’m able to do him a little bit of justice in this series. Draven’s other best friend, Poe, is a little wild and looking forward to that rocker musician lifestyle. LOL.

I think my group here is a great mix of personalities and ethnicity, with the occasional clash to make it interesting. LOL.

It’s funny, as I look at the break down of each character, I’ve noticed two things: 1) I tend to create an introverted/reserved MC and extroverted/silly/quirky friend(s) and 2) my MC’s have only one or two good friends.

I really am writing what I know. And I’m not just referring to the fact that all of my books are based in Phoenix, AZ. In real life, I’m the introverted/reserved MC and I have two best friends that I’ve known over 20 years each. That’s my tiny, ironclad circle of friendship. But they—and the other friends I have–are so much more than me: outgoing, bold, self-confident, strong. I feed off that and have come out of my shell a lot over the years. I have that “friendship diversity” in real life—and it works for me—and I guess I want that for my characters, too.

So, I looked up the word.

Seriously.

I’ve heard of it, but have never ever heard anyone use it in a sentence. LOL. It’s such an old-fashioned word. Who would even use it in today’s society? So I looked it up and liked the second definition:

a power or process of transforming something common into something special

I would use this definition to describe what I do. I transform something common into something special. Miz Rinda Elliott, I think this needs to be on a shirt.

When I was young, I used to talk to myself. I used to have long, in-depth conversations. No, I didn’t have an imaginary friend. No, no one ever answered back. And no, the conversations were never two-sided. I don’t remember what the conversations were about, but I bet they were damn good. It all starts with an active imagination.

My first book, Secrets and Kisses, is a twist on one of my favorite 80′s TV shows, 21 JUMP STREET.

My second book, Dance Jam Productions, is 50% reoccurring dream and 50% real-life. Once I wrote it, I stopped having the dream.

The main character from my YA series, Draven Atreides, Teenage Informant, is based off of my then 16-yr-old-now-20-yr-old niece.

Writers are a unique breed of people who utilize our own brand of alchemy. We take bits and pieces of this and that and Poof! Voila! Abracadabra! a full-length novel appears once the smoke clears.

Yeah. I’m diggin’ it.

I was taking three classes, but then dropped the Modern Fiction course at Rio Salado. I guess I wasn’t into is as I thought I’d be. I figure I’ll take up a Creative Writing course at a later date. I’ve also been working on a community project for one of my other courses (which I’ll officially announce on Monday) and that’s overshadowed just about everything. That assignment involved a powwow with my BF and grew into something worth “squeeing” about.

I knocked out one of my New Years Resolutions last month by joining a gym: 24 Hour Fitness. I’m currently taking 2 dance fitness classes a week and let me tell you: that first class was. A. Killer. The 24Dance is on Monday nights at 530, so I basically go there straight from work. It’s all different types of dance—salsa, jive, hip-hop, bellydancing, etc. Seeing as how it was my first time, I didn’t stretch out. And paid for it two days later. By the time the Zumba class rolled around on Thursday evening, I was no longer sore. Of course, that comforting thought ended after an hr in that class. I could barely walk the next few days. Everything hurt and my body was saying things like “Ohmygodohmygodohmygod. Stop. Moving.” But I was sleeping good. Sleeping like the dead. And I had more energy. Now, a month later, I think my body’s gotten used to the high-intensity-heart-pumping classes and I’m no longer sore. Ar least, not as much as I used to be. I think I may be even losing some weight.

In the midst of all this, I tried to join a writing accountability group. “Tried” being the key word because I only did it for 2 weeks. This group was going to help me balance my writing life with my real life. We posted daily goals each week, but by the second week, I was already starting to see a pattern: 1) I would forget was I was supposed to be doing each day and 2) When I was supposed to be concentrating on writing DA3, I would think about something I had to do for school. During this 2 week period, I was feeling a little depressed and was carrying around this…raging anger. I was holding all this in and it was affecting my interactions with my manager at work.

The group itself wasn’t making me feel this, by no means. Part of it, I’m sure, was because of Auntie Flow’s Monthly Visit. The main thing was that I had inserted something new into my life and it wasn’t working. Once again, I was getting overwhelmed. My writing felt forced. I needed to take stock. Even though I was excited and hopeful about being a part of this group, it was just a case of wrong place, wrong time.

I’ve come to realize that until I find a balance with school, I can’t balance anything else. I need to find a groove with school before I can throw writing into the mix. I’m a officially a junior now, in my second semester, taking only two classes. I’ll be taking 3 starting in the summer until I graduate. I may never find a groove. Trying to find a mentor for these classes is a little intimidating and a little time-consuming. It’s something that’s always in the back of my mind, so I can never really relax. I may not be able to fit writing in–comfortably–until I graduate. I don’t want it to come to that, but it’s a possibility. I’m not okay with that, but unfortunately, I know me and my personality… I’m hoping that next year–January maybe?–I may have calmed some and can get back into Draven’s world.

Due to the whole school thing, I’ve also been neglecting my first two books. They’ve been reissued through a new publisher, with new covers, and I have yet to re-introduce them to the public. To help a sistah out, I invested $20-something and change in John Kremer‘s 1001 Ways to Market Your Books. Little by little, I hope to get the word out again about my books.

So…that’s the story. That’s where I’m at right now. You may see more posts, but don’t hold your breath. LOL. I like participating in the Sunday Scribbling and YA Highway’s Road Trip Wednesday. Maybe I’ll get back into the Weekend Wrap-Ups, too.

“You can’t─you can’t what?” she sputtered hoarsely.
I flushed again, thankful that my sunglasses gave me a semblance of protection.
“I’m not about to repeat it. What part didn’t you get?” I uttered between motionless lips.
I didn’t know why I was acting like this. No one could hear us, unless that someone had a long-range microphone, but I wasn’t about to get paranoid. This was only a minor setback. It could be fixed. I watched as Ellie shook herself out of her shock and carefully set her bagel on its wrapper. She rubbed her hands together, removing crumbs, then pinned me with a “Let’s get down to business” look.
“Let me get this straight. You don’t know how to kiss.”
“No…yes…I mean─”
“It’s a yes or no question, Sky,” Ellie broke in.
“No, it’s not a question because you didn’t ask me anything. It was more like a…verification statement.” I just made up something.
“Okay. Then tell me this: Do you know how to kiss?”
“Yes,” I answered, then nibbled on my bottom lip nervously. “Sort of.”

Since I had so much fun doing it last time, I’m going to do it again. Here’s an excerpt from my first book, SECRETS AND KISSES, using the word of the day.

“You look absolutely hot, Skylar. Your dress is totally amazing.” Kedren said the last word as though he’d been running in a marathon.

Blushing, I glanced up at him and flashed him a quick smile.“Thanks.”

Hot. Was that better than gorgeous? I asked myself.

“You look…pretty handsome yourself,” I reciprocated. Handsome was a major understatement, but I wasn’t brave enough to use the word delicious.

Friday -Signed up to volunteer for a 6-week Professional Artist Series session through Free Arts AZ. It’s a Creative Writing one and the first session was this evening. Will post that later in the week. Took my niece out dinner to celebrate the fact that she was one of 10 people to get accepted into the Herberger Institute for the Arts. If you’re a Theater major at ASU, your goal is to get into this place. You get two semesters to try and if you fail, they make you change your major! I know, a little pressure, much? You have the choice of writing three essays or writing two essays and performing two monologues.

My niece said a lot of the students don’t get in because they take the easy way out and just do the three essays. You think they’d do the monologues. I mean, they chose theater as a major, after all. She said she did an easy monologue from Othello and one she did in her class last semester. I am SO proud of her, I’m bustin’ a gut. They have guest speakers from the industry come and talk to the students and she’ll have an opportunity to audition for plays that show at The Herberger Theater and Gammage (where Phantom of the Opera is playing right now). These two places–well, Gammage more than the other–is like Arizona’s version of Broadway. Did I mention how proud I am of my girl? In ten years, she sees herself acting. And so do I.

Saturday – Had a fun time at The Gurl House with modeling magic clay (interesting. Dries a little foamy. It’s weird), and this one will be posted later in the week, as well. Quickly checked out White House Black Market for a dress for my company’s upcoming holiday party. I like long dresses–ankle length–and they didn’t have any. Will be checking out the mall this weekend. Did some laundry to prepare for the event on Sunday…

Sunday – Volunteered my time at the 15th Annual Palette of Homes Tour. Got to see how the other lives for the first time. And they live well. Lucky you, you actually get to read about it now. LOL. By the time I got home from this event, I was tired and hurting a little. Didn’t wear the right shoes for standing.
